Montana extends EWU's losing skid

CHENEY — Art Steward had 19 points as Montana won for the ninth time in its past 10 games, beating Eastern Washington 74-60 on Thursday night.

Kareem Jamar had 15 points for the Grizzlies (14-6 overall, 7-1 Big Sky). Collin Chiverton scored 22 points for the Eagles (9-12, 3-5), who lost their fourth straight.

Leading by as many as 14 early, Montana saw Eastern Washington cut its deficit to 46-45 on Laron Griffin's basket with 14:30 left. The Grizzlies responded with a 9-2 run, including five points from Mathias Ward, to take a 55-47 lead with 12 minutes left. Eastern Washington never got closer than six after that.

Will Cherry had 11 points and Ward 10 for Montana. Laron Griffin had 12 points and Cliff Ederaine 10 for Eastern Washington.

At No. 7 N. Carolina 74,

Tyler Zeller had 21 points and a career-best 17 rebounds to help North Carolina prevail.

Reggie Bullock added 11 points in his first career start for the Tar Heels (17-3, 4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), who had no trouble winning their 11th straight against their rivals.

While North Carolina State (15-6, 4-2) was off to its best start in the conference in six years under new coach Mark Gottfried, the Tar Heels ended up making this game look like almost every other in the five years since the Wolfpack last beat them.

With its bigger front line dominating inside, North Carolina shot 48 percent and led by 31 points in the second half.

Brittney Griner had 18 points and seven blocks, Odyssey Sims and Terran Condrey scored 14 points apiece, and Baylor ran away in the second half and beat Oklahoma.

The Bears (20-0, 7-0 Big 12) barely escaped with a one-point win in Norman last season on their way to the regular-season conference title, but this time left nothing in question.

Whitney Hand led Oklahoma (12-6, 4-3) with 19 points.

Stephanie Golden scored 15 points off the bench as the Bulldogs stormed to a 15-point halftime lead and cruised past the Lions.

Kayla Standish and Haiden Palmer each scored 14 points for Gonzaga (18-3, 7-1 West Coast Conference).

Hazel Ramirez scored 24 points and Alex Cowling had 23 for the Lions (5-15, 1-7).
