Lake Stevens second behind Union | Saturday's Wrestling Highlights

Arlington's Blake McPherson won a showdown of unbeaten wrestlers in the 195-pound final, and Union outpointed Lake Stevens for the Region 1 team crown.

LAKE STEVENS — Union of Vancouver got championships from four of its 13 wrestlers and qualified 11 for state, outpointing runner-up Lake Stevens by 30.5 points for the Class 4A Region 1 boys wrestling championship on Saturday at Cavelero Middle School.

Union had 200 points, Lake Stevens 169.5, Evergreen of Vancouver 138 and fourth-place Snohomish 135.

Arlington got a championship at 195 pounds from Blake McPherson, who defeated Union's Bryson Page in a matchup of unbeaten wrestlers, 20-10.

Lake Stevens got victories in the finals from Eric Soler (126), Kinsey Johnson (138), Ryan Olliges (182) and Brandon Johnson (285).

Other boys wrestling

Class 4A Region 2

At Rogers High School, Spencer Schroeder (106), Taylor Salzberg (120), Adam Roman (132) Ian Steen (138), Grant Steen (145) and Joseph Gomez (182) won titles for Graham-Kapowsin, leading the Eagles to the team crown by a big margin. G-K finished with 212 points to runner-up Beamer's 132.5.

SPSL South teams took the top four places, with Woodinville of KingCo 4A placing fifth. Beamer's Ares Carpio stayed unbeaten this season while winning the 126-pound title. Bothell's Brandon Davidson (152), Woodinville's Ryan Christianson (160), Eastlake's Eric Harper (170) gave KingCo wrestlers wins at consecutive weights.

Class 3A Region 1

At Skyline High School, defending state champ Josh Mitchell of Mount Si will return to the state meet as regional champ at 285 pounds after winning by injury default in his final.

Sedro-Woolley's depth paid off in a team victory, although KingCo 3A and WesCo 3A wrestlers got their share of victories.

There were some entertaining title matches, with Lynnwood's Hunter Lord edging Oak Harbor's Joshua Crebbin 15-14 at 152, Liberty's Hamilton Noel defeating Mercer Island's Blake Johnson 3-2 at 160 and Everett's Connor Boyce getting past Lake Washington's Yaroslav Petrechko 9-8 at 170.

Meadowdale sophomore Ciaran Ball got a pin in the final at 195.

Class 3A Region 2

At Eastside Catholic, O'Dea (201 points) outdistanced runner-up Highline (179) and Bainbridge (175) for the team championship. The Irish got titles from six wrestlers — Nathan Turner (132), Dominic Nicaci (138), Gage Anderson (145), Trenton Tibbetts (152), David Dempsey (220) and Cody Fulleton (285).

Bishop Blanchet's Peter Johnson, a state runner-up last year, stayed unbeaten this season on his way to the 195-pound title.

Matt Iwicki of Eastside Catholic won at 113 pounds with lightning-quick pins in 1:03 and 1:07 before pinning his title-match opponent in only 12 seconds.

Class 3A Region 3

At Bonney Lake, Enumclaw junior Lucas Somera, the defending state champion at 138 pounds, was upset in the semifinals by sophomore Aaron Blaine of Hudson's Bay and had to settle for third place, but Enumclaw still had just enough to outscore Yelm for the team crown, 206.5 to 194.

T.J. Cormier got three straight pins for Enumclaw on his way to the title at 195 pounds, and Tyke Reid won at 120 for the Hornets.

Kyle Gleed (285) and Nick Lindholm (126) got titles for Decatur.

Girls wrestling

At Emerald Ridge, White River got pins from Mikaela Kilcup and Samantha Mitchell in their finals as the Hornets edged Federal Way in a competitive battle for the Region 2 team championship, 134 points to 131. Among other winners was unbeaten 106-pounder Arian Carpio of Beamer.

At Bellingham, Sedro-Woolley took the Region 1 team title, with Mount Baker second and Stanwood third. Stanwood got championships from a trio of wrestlers — Savannah Phillips, Casey Mather and Laura Charboneau.
