A Shoreline man was killed Thursday night when part of a tree fell on him while he was walking in a park.

Patrick R. Duff, 32, was killed instantly when he was struck by a portion of the tree as he and his wife walked their dog in the city's Hamlin Park located at 15th Avenue Northeast near Northeast 160th Street. He was pronounced dead at 7:10 p.m.

Shoreline Director of Parks Dick Deal said the tree was an apparently healthy white pine, one of thousands of trees in the park and a limb from the top snapped off during the wind storm and fell, striking the man.

Deal said the parks department has two arborists on its staff who inspect park trees. This particular tree was not known to have an particular problems.
