BERKELEY, Calif. — Second-ranked Washington's volleyball team started slowly, but closed the Pac-10 season by beating No. 15 California 26-30, 30-19, 30-20, 30-24 Saturday night.
Washington (25-4 overall, 15-3 Pac-10), which was swept by Stanford on Friday, finished second in the conference to the Cardinal. The Huskies will learn their postseason fate today when the NCAA tournament's 64-team field is announced on ESPNews at noon. Cal finished 20-9, 9-9.
Junior Christal Morrison led UW with 18 kills and 20 digs, her 16th double double. Senior Courtney Thompson paced Washington's offense with 59 assists, moving into ninth on the NCAA career list with 6,333. Freshman Tamari Miyashiro anchored Washington's defense with 24 digs.
WSU falls to Stanford
STANFORD, Calif. — No. 3 Stanford clinched the Pac-10 championship with a 30-27, 30-23, 30-18 victory over Washington State.
Stanford (25-3, 16-2) was led by senior Kristin Richards' 21 kills, and Bryn Kehoe's 40 assists. For WSU (15-17, 3-15), Adetokunbo Faleti had 11 kills, and Corina Beyer 28 assists.
Oregon AD resigns
EUGENE, Ore. — Bill Moos is expected to resign as athletic director at Oregon this week, the Register-Guard reported Saturday night on its Web site. Sources close to Moos and in the school's administration confirmed the resignation, citing personal reasons.
Moos, 55, has been athletic director since 1995, and guided the expansion of Autzen Stadium and the construction of Moshofsky Center.
