Washington volleyball sweeps past Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. — Kindra Carlson posted a career-high 24 kills in just three sets Sunday, leading the fifth-ranked Washington volleyball team to a sweep of Arizona State at the Wells Fargo Arena.

Washington improved to 19-2 overall with the 25-23, 28-26, 25-18 victory.

The Huskies are alone in first place in the Pac-10 standings once again at 9-2, as Stanford dropped into a tie with UCLA for second at 8-3 over the weekend.

Carlson hit .396 with just three errors on 53 total swings. Overall, the Huskies outhit the Devils .244-.171 and owned the net with 10 ½ blocks to five for ASU.

Other volleyball

Cristin Richards had 13 kills for Seattle University (6-19), which fell 25-14, 25-22, 25-13 to host Cal State Bakersfield.

Women's soccer

McKenna Waitley scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season for Washington (11-4-3, 3-2-2 Pac-10), but it was not enough as No. 25 Oregon State scored a late goal to edge the Huskies 2-1 in Corvallis.

• In its final match of the 2009 season, Seattle University fell 2-1 to host San Diego. Kassandra Riozzi had the goal for the Redhawks (7-11-1).

Ali Fenter and Carly Dobratz scored first-half goals for No. 19 Washington State (13-4-1, 5-1-1 Pac-10), which defeated Oregon 2-0 in Eugene.

• Gonzaga (8-11) outshot host UC Irvine 12-10, but the Anteaters came away with the 2-0 nonconference victory.

Washington battled No. 18 Stanford to a scoreless draw at Husky Soccer Field. The Huskies (4-5-6, 1-1-4 Pac-10) tied a school record with their sixth tie of the season.

Ian Walsh scored with less than two minutes left in the second overtime to give Seattle University (3-10-1, 2-3 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) a 2-1 victory over Air Force in Tukwila.

Nick Barclay scored the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 57th minute, and Gonzaga (6-7-3, 3-5-1 West Coast) rolled to a 5-0 victory over Saint Mary's in Spokane.

Men's basketball

Cameron Severson scored a career-high 19 points for Western Washington (2-1), which wrapped up play at the Disney Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim, Calif., with a 71-52 victory over San Francisco State.

Benny Valentine scored 22 for Eastern Washington, which posted a 98-61 victory over Saint Martin's in an exhibition game in Cheney.

Women's basketball

Jazmine Perkins scored a game-high 19 points for Washington State, which defeated Lewis-Clark State 76-58 in its season-opening exhibition game in Pullman.

• Western Washington led by 16 points early in the second half but couldn't hold on in an eventual 65-62 exhibition loss to Simon Fraser in Bellingham.
