Walk-on Brendan Sherrer, a graduate of Archbishop Murphy of Everett, was officially added to the Washington men's basketball roster Monday.
The Huskies found the 6-foot-9, 240-pound forward in a walk-on tryout camp held last month. He is the first walk-on to make the team since 2004.
"He's got size and that is something that will help us when practicing," Huskies coach Lorenzo Romar said in a statement. "He's strong enough to push the other guys and he's only a sophomore, so he has a chance to grow with the guys."
Washington opens its 2009-10 season with an exhibition game against Central Washington at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Edmundson Pavilion.
Women's golf
Washington's Anya Alvarez shot a 2-over-par 74 to stand tied for 23rd, and the Huskies shot a 24-over 312 to stand 16th after the first round of the Turtle Bay Resort Collegiate Invitational in Kahuku, Hawaii.
• Washington State's Ali Thompson shot an even-par 70, good for a tie for 10th place, and the Cougars shot an 11-over 291 to stand ninth after the first round of the Challenge at Onion Creek in Austin, Texas.
Men's soccer
Kellan Brown scored for Western Washington (7-11-1) in a 1-1 tie with University of Mary (N.D.) in Billings, Mont.
Volleyball
Cristin Richards posted a season-high 22 kills for Seattle University (7-19), which pulled out a 26-28, 25-19, 25-19, 20-25, 15-9 victory over host Cal State Bakersfield.

• The Washington State Golf Association has updated its calculations of the USGA course and slope ratings for Chambers Bay, the course in University Place that will be the site of the 2010 U.S. Amateur Championship and the 2015 U.S. Open Championship.
The championship tees at Chambers Bay will play to two combinations of yardages and ratings. The first combination measures at 7,591 yards with a USGA course rating of 76.0 and a USGA slope rating of 135. The second combination measures at 7,688 yards with a rating/slope of 76.6/137. Although par is listed at 72, the USGA has indicated it will most likely alter the par on a few of the holes during the two championships, specifically on holes 1, 13 and 18.
