Washington softball wins twice at Arizona tournament

TEMPE, Ariz. — Kaitlin Inglesby used her arm and her bat to help rally the 12th-ranked Washington softball team to a 10-3 victory over Northwestern on Saturday at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.

In their first game of day, the Huskies defeated Idaho State, 10-2.

Against the Wildcats, Inglesby and Kylee Lahners each hit home runs. Hooch Fagaly, returning from an ACL tear last season, led the team with two hits and three runs batted in.

Northwestern got to Inglesby early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. The Huskies came right back in the top of the second, with Fagaly and Kimi Pohlman driving in runs to tie the score.

Washington (4-0) took the lead on Lahners' three-run homer in the third. It tacked on a run with Inglesby's solo shot in the fifth, then broke things open with a four-run sixth.

On the mound, Inglesby (3-0) allowed three runs on three hits while striking out four.

Tennis

The Washington men (5-2) posted straight-set singles wins on five courts on the way to a 6-1 win over No. 28 Michigan at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. At No. 1 singles, the Huskies' Kyle McMorrow, ranked 15th, defeated sixth-ranked Evan King, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).

• The Seattle University women dropped a 4-3 decision to Portland at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. The match was decided at No. 3 singles, where the Redhawks' Lindsey Newman succumbed after more than 3 ½ hours to Portland's Valeska Hoath, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Men's basketball

David Downs led all scorers with 23 points, including four free throws inside the final minute that helped Seattle Pacific (19-5, 11-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) complete its first season sweep in 10 years of Central Washington (11-11, 5-9) with a 72-64 victory at Brougham Pavilion.

Richard Woodworth scored seven of his 15 points in the final three minutes as Western Washington (22-3, 13-1 GNAC) fought off Alaska Fairbanks in Bellingham.

• Host Oregon Tech routed Northwest University (24-3, 14-3 Cascade Collegiate) 95-69.

Women's basketball

Katie Benson put up 22 points and 10 rebounds for her third career double-double for Seattle Pacific (15-8, 9-6 GNAC), but Central Washington (15-8, 9-6) drained 12 shots from three-point range and hung on to beat the Falcons 80-75 in Ellensburg.

Kristin Schramm had game highs of 16 points and seven rebounds as Western Washington (16-6, 10-4 GNAC) took a 91-62 win from host Alaska Fairbanks.

Domi Mendezona scored 17 of her 20 points in the second half as Northwest U (11-14, 7-10 CCC) rallied to edge host Oregon Tech, 72-70.

Gymnastics

Washington, ranked 20th, finished third at the Masters Classic quad meet in Lincoln, Neb. Eighth-ranked Nebraska won with a score of 196.550, followed by No. 22 Michigan (195.825), UW (194.150) and Southern Utah (191.900).

Several Huskies posted season and career highs, led by Paige Bixler's third-place beam score of 9.825.

• Seattle Pacific's Jenna Dudley recorded the sixth-highest vault score in school history with a second-place mark of 9.850, and the Falcons (190.650 points) finished second to host Illinois-Chicago (195.000) in a road dual meet.

Other softball

Seattle University fell to 0-5 with two losses on the final day of the Oceanic Time Warner Paradise Classic in Honolulu. The Redhawks were thrashed 21-0 by Hawaii, then lost 3-2 to Missouri-Kansas City.

• Western Washington (2-7) defeated Grand Canyon, 9-6, then dropped a 7-5 decision to the Academy of Art at the Desert Stinger Tournament in Las Vegas.

Baseball

Brothers Brett and Kasey Bielec both went 3 for 5 in Game 1 of Central Washington's doubleheader, an 8-7 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside, Calif. The Wildcats (1-4) lost the second game, 6-1.
