Veteran Seattle Times staff photographer Dean Rutz showed our new summer photo intern Joel Hawksley, of Ohio University, the ropes of photographing the Seattle Sounders FC Thursday evening at CenturyLink Field in Seattle.

"Big stadiums can be incredibly confusing for a new photographer," Hawksley said. "Dean showed me around CenturyLink field and helped me get comfortable working in the MLS environment."

Rutz, an employee of 23 years who has photographed the Olympics six times, taught Hawksley where he could and could not photograph. He also helped him find the pre-game meal, get online in the press box and introduced him to the large group of photographers that cover the Seattle Sounders FC on a regular basis.

"Having someone show you around when you're first starting out is a godsend," Hawksley said. "It helps you avoid making the same mistakes everyone else did their first time around, holding all of us photographers to a higher professional standard."

Throughout the next three months, look for Hawksley's photos in The Seattle Times newspaper and at seattletimes.com.
