The art of bonsai

ERIKA SCHULTZ / THE SEATTLE TIMES

Sharon Muth, 74, works on a larch bonsai tree at her family's store, Bonsai Northwest, recently. The store, open for the past 28 years in Tukwila, sells bonsai trees just a few years old to others that are 400-500 years old. Muth describes the art of bonsai as, "Taking a regular tree and miniaturizing it with pruning and wiring and special techniques and putting it in a container" to make it look like a replica of a full-grown, aged tree in nature. "It's my passion, an addiction," she said.
