| ON THE COVER: The end of a long, emotional journey boiled down to this moment, as Marine Lance Cpl. Aaron Job of Issaquah is embraced by his parents, Eric and Debbie, at Camp Pendleton, Calif., on Sept. 13 after returning from Iraq. Seattle Times reporter Jack Broom and I had covered the Job family story since February. But after investing so much time to get to this very personal moment, I almost didn't get the picture because of a problem with a camera Eric's, not mine. I'm a bit short, and from where I stood, the father's camera was blocking his wife's face. I had to hold my camera over my head and record the scene without looking through the viewfinder. This was the only frame that worked. The lesson: The camera can giveth, but the camera can also taketh away. |
